WALTHILL PUBLIC SCHOOLS

NEWSLETTER DECEMBER/JANUARY 09-10

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT:

I really want to thank everyone who attended the Parent / Teacher conferences in October.  The school success depends on your involvement in your child’s education.  Continue to share with your child the value of good attendance and importance of an education.

I encourage you to take time to visit our school and continue supporting our students in their activities.  The school website is http://walthweb.esu1.org/   I encourage everyone to take time to visit our website to check on your student’s grades and the success stories of our students.  The school has purchased some interactive boards for the classroom to help with our academic progress.  One of our school goals is to focus on our reading and math skills.  The interactive boards allow the students to be active in the learning process and demonstrate their skills without feeling pressured or discouraged about giving an incorrect answer. The teachers use the boards to see which students have mastered the objective being taught.

December and January are busy months for activities in the school.  The girls and boys basketball seasons have begun.  Our drama and music departments are busy in contests.  All of this is going on along with our students finishing up their semester work in the classrooms.  Parent encouragement about academics is very important at this time.

The month of December and January can bring about more inclement weather.  Continue to watch the local news stations for any cancellations, early dismissal or late starts.

I hope everyone has a great holiday season with your children.  Put time into your schedule to play with your child.  Listen to their thoughts and ideas to be a part of their lives.

Sincerely,

Ed Stansberry

UNK and Walthill Public School Make Connections

The University of Nebraska at Kearney invited our students to assist in their opening ceremonies in honor of Native American Heritage Month.

Thursday, November 5 three students, Kourtney Merrick, Cameron Freemont, and CJ Free; drumming teacher, Sam Grant; and administrators, Ed Stansberry and Carol Hilker were greeted in Kearney by UNK’s multicultural group, the SKINS.  We took a short tour of the campus before we were featured at a Multi-Cultural Event held at the universities downtown museum. Sam, CJ, and Cameron opened the event with the Flag Song. Then, Mr. Stansberry and Sam joined two others on a panel discussion.  The topic was related to what we as educators can do to increase the number of Native American students who attend college.  Following the panel discussion Sam, CJ, and Cameron sang and drummed an Honor Song.  We concluded the evening event with Kourtney leading the students in a round dance.

Friday morning we met with the director of admissions, had an extended tour of the campus before meeting in the center of campus at their Bell Tower.  Members of the SKINS group read stories and poems giving honor to the Native Americans of Nebraska.  The opening ceremonies were concluded with Sam playing and singing an Honor Song.

Positive connections were made between UNK students and ours.  Members of the SKINS group were making plans before we left for us to join them in the spring for their multi-cultural celebration.  They would also like to spend a day with us here in Walthill. This was a rewarding experience for all who attended.

Veterans Day Program

The Walthill Elementary Student Council hosted a Veterans Day Program on Wednesday, November 11th.  Several Veterans and community members attended the program as well as the entire school.  Veterans brought in the flag to the Umonhon Flag Song, played by the Walthill Alumni Drum Group.  Rodney Morris said a prayer and Gary Davis read a story to the students about the Vietnam Wall.  The Elementary classes sang the Star Spangled Banner and lead the flag Salute.  Mrs. Modlin’s 4th grade class read letters that they wrote to the Veterans and the Student Council read the names of Veterans (that students had turned in to be honored at the program).  The program ended with an Honor Song.

WOW does the year fly by when you are having fun. We had a great time on our field trip to Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. Everyone brought pumpkins back to school. We tried to guess how many seeds were in our pumpkins, by cleaning them out and counting the seeds. We were all surprised. Our twelve pumpkins had 7,620 seeds.

Our class has studied the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog. We learned about landform, fossils, dinosaurs, and many other things in Science. We have studied about communities, neighborhoods, (rural and urban) and laws in Social Studies. We are awesome at regrouping in Math. Our whole class likes working on the flipcharts that Mrs. Burcham puts on the board with the computer. We like going to the board and doing the cool things that you can do with the flip charts. It doesn’t even seem like we are doing work.

AUTHORS' ASSEMBLY

The first Authors' Assembly of this year was held October 31, at 8:15 a.m. in the school gymnasium.  Young authors in grades kindergarten through sixth grade participated.  Students were selected by their teachers to read their Halloween stories to the audience.  Compared to last year's assemblies, I noticed a huge improvement in the students' ability to project their voices.   We could actually hear them speaking loudly and clearly.  It was so nice to see so many parents attending the assembly and giving the students their support.   Congratulations to all students and teachers for working so hard and writing so well!

5th Graders Work on Native American Villages

The 5th grade class has been working on their Native American Village projects.  The class chose the tribe they wanted to research, read books and looked on the Internet for information.  Students used the information to create villages that included the types of homes the tribes lived in, food, weapons, clothing, transportation, and landscapes.  Jaeclyn, a fifth grader, stated, “It was kind of hard but once you knew about your tribe it was easier to do it.  It is fun to show off what you know by building stuff.”  The villages will be on display the first part of December.

6th Graders Get Tech Savy

The 6th grade class is currently working on their Egypt projects.  This year is different from other years because on the introduction of flash drives, purchased by the school.  All 5th and 6th grade students have been provided with a flash drive to use for school projects.  This is important because few items are saved to a disc or a CD now, and flash drives are being used to transfer information from one computer to another.  The 6th graders researched their topics on the Internet and also looked for pictures to go along with their facts.  The students saved their pictures and their data on their flash drives and were able to access them from any computer in order to make edits and changes on their projects.  Some students even used them to create the projects.  Some students created magazines, baseball type cards, and even report cards to share the information they gained.  Students are also allowed to check out the flash drives and use them at home.
DeAndre said, “They are cool.  We can save all of our stuff and we don’t have to go back on the same computer if we need it.”  Marguel stated, “I used mine to create a magazine.  It was easier to go back to print and edit my pages and every thing.”

Junior High

Junior High is a buzz with change and projects. We have recently changed our schedule to allow two certified teachers in each of the core classes. This is to better attend to students’ needs at all academic and behavior levels.

Next week we will be displaying our “Vacation/Favorite Spot” projects in the Junior High hallways. Please stop in and check them out.

We would also encourage parents to stop into visit our classrooms. We have new Promethean boards in two of our rooms. The students really seem to enjoy using these interactive white boards.

I am very excited to be working with the Walthill students. They have presented me with many challenges but more joy than I thought possible.  My first several weeks here have been great! I look forward to what each day will bring. Ask the students I am always smiling and most of the time I don’t realize I am until they tell me J

Hope to see you in our classrooms for a visit soon.

 Volleyball 2009

This year’s varsity volleyball team had a good year, with a lot of adversity thrown their way. The girls worked hard to overcome the breaking in of a new setter, and all kinds of illness the 2nd half of the season. When not sick and even sometimes when they were, they practiced hard and continued to improve as the season progressed. Several teams on our schedule this year had a whole starting line-up taller than any one of our girls, but this did not stop the girls from competing and believing that they could play with and beat many of these teams. This team should be proud of what they have achieved and the strides they have taken to improve.

We finished the season with a record of 7-14. Season highlights include a great 5 set win versus Winnebago, a sweep of Santee avenging an earlier loss to them, a 5th place finish at the All-Indian Conference Tournament; two great games at the Gayville-Volin Tournament, and a season sweep of Omaha Nation. Individually, Sonjra Sheridan and Chelsea Grant made all tourney at the AIC tournament, Marcel Grant and Angel White also made all tourney for our 2nd team at the AIC tournament. Chelsea Grant also earned an honorable mention award for the Lewis and Clark Conference and Danna Miller received first team all conference for the Lewis and Clark Conference.

Congratulations to all volleyball participants for a terrific season. Thanks to all students, staff, administration and parents for all the support given to the girls this past season.

The 2009 Addition of Walthill Blujays closed out the year with a 0-8 record. Much progress was made, as there were several close games. There were also 3 players chosen honorable mention in district play.  They were Sinjin Sheridan, Thaddeus Roundstone on defense   and David walker on offense.

The players who finished the season were freshmen Manuel Moniz, Hugo Rodas, Miguel Moniz, and Shaquille Grant. Narcisse Wood and Kendal McCauley represented the sophomore class. The junior class included Wesley Moniz, Sinjin Sheridan, Kylan Dale and David Walker. Anpetu Freemont, Cameron Freemont, and Thaddeus Roundstone led the senior class, which showed good leadership throughout the year.

The Blujays were coached by John Singer, Glenn Randel, and Gary Redden.

The Walthill Blujays Junior High team finished the year with a 0-3 record. The Blujays saved their best game for the last one against Winnebego by scoring two touchdowns.  Finishing, the year were Lee Cline, Devon Moniz, Trey Hundley, Sheldon Sheridan, Maura Moniz Morris, Jalise  Randol,  Jonathan Olson  and Bernie Jackson.

Business Education News

By Mrs. JoAnn Schmedding

The 7th grade computer students have completed going over the alphabetic keys and have learned the 10-key numeric keypad.  They are ready to move on to bigger and better things.  The first unit we are going to cover is doing presentations with PowerPoint.  Next year with the help of Mrs. Paula Low, hopefully the elementary students will have mastered the keyboard before entering junior high so I can begin the year with activities other than teaching the keyboard!

In 8th grade the students are designing flyers, posters and creating business cards using the picture and drawing tools of Word.  They also created their own version of a 44-cent stamp.

The personal finance class has completed a simulation, which covered financial management of a single person, single parent and married couple.  After completing the simulation the class went on a field trip to the local Charter West Bank. The class is concluding the quarter with a career’s unit.  Each student has registered on the Nebraska Career Connection website.

Computer applications are completing a unit on setting up gridline tables.  These tables were formatted with boarders, color coding, merging of cells, splitting of cells, sorting of text, alignments, and adjustments of widths and heights of column and rows.

Second semester pod casting and desktop publishing will be offered.  We will continue to take pictures of school activities so they can be documented as a pod cast online and in the 2010 yearbook.  If you are interested in purchasing a 2009 yearbook, there are still a few available.  Contact Mrs. Schmedding or Mr. Van Etten.

Traditional WAIT Wedding

WAIT stands for “Why Am I Tempted” and is a 6-week program based on Abstinence Education, and teaches the students that the choices they make not only affect themselves, but their family and loved ones.  It also teaches the teens that staying true to themselves and their beliefs is more important then peer pressure and abstinence is the only thing that is 100% effective against teen pregnancy.

The class performed a Traditional Native Wedding Ceremony, where some students pledged to practice abstinence until marriage.

Q&A: Get the facts on the H1N1 Virus

Q: What is Novel Influenza A (H1N1)?

A: The CDC states that the H1N1 virus (originally referred to as "swine flu") is a new respiratory virus similar to Influenza A. Recent tests have shown the virus is actually different from the virus typically found in North American pigs. The virus is capable of being passed between humans.

Q: How does the H1N1 flu spread?

A: Spread of this H1N1 virus is thought to be happening in the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. People may become infected by touching surfaces such as a countertop with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

Q: Is the current strain of Novel Influenza A (H1N1) contagious?

A: Yes, the CDC has determined that this Novel Influenza A (H1N1) strain is contagious and can spread from human to human.

Q: How do I protect myself and my family from Novel Influenza A (H1N1)?

A: Take these everyday steps to protect your health:

Q: What are the signs and symptoms of this virus in people?

A: The symptoms of this new H1N1 flu virus in people are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. A significant number of people who have been infected with this virus also have reported diarrhea and vomiting. Also, like seasonal flu, severe illnesses and death has occurred as a result of illness associated with this virus.

Q: What surfaces are most likely to be sources of contamination?

A: Germs can be spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person move through the air. Germs can be spread when a person touches respiratory droplets from another person on a surface like a desk, for example, and then touches their own eyes, mouth or nose before washing their hands.

Winter Weather Information

During winter there will be some days when it is questionable whether to have school or not due to inclement weather.  If possible, a decision about the next school day will be made by 9:00 p.m. for announcement during the 10:00 p.m. news.  An early decision is not always possible because of uncertain weather conditions.  School officials will make periodic assessments of conditions during the night and will decide early in the morning (by 6:30 a.m. if possible).

Occasionally, weather conditions will deteriorate during a school day to the point where early dismissals are necessary.  We try to give a 1-hour notice prior to early dismissal, watch the stations listed below for an announcement.
